Patios driveways in Aston By Stone
A well-designed patio extends your living space and adds value to your property. Many driveway contractors in Essex and the local area also specialise in patio installation, using natural stone, porcelain or concrete slabs. Whether you want a simple seating area or a full garden transformation, local contractors can help.
In Aston By Stone, local contractors specialising in patios driveways handle every stage of the project: site preparation, excavation, sub-base installation, surface laying and finishing. Typical installation time is 2–5 days depending on size and preparation, with a lifespan of 20–30 years for natural stone, 30+ years for porcelain when properly installed and maintained.
Popular patio materials in Essex
Indian sandstone (Raj Green, Autumn Brown, Grey) is the most popular natural stone choice — affordable, attractive and available in riven or sawn finishes. Porcelain is gaining ground for its modern look, near-zero porosity and stain resistance. Concrete slabs remain the budget option. Marshalls, Stonemarket and Natural Paving are the most commonly specified brands locally.
Drainage and ground preparation
Patios should fall away from the house at a minimum 1:80 gradient to prevent water pooling against walls. On Essex clay, a 100–150mm compacted sub-base is recommended. Porcelain slabs require a priming slurry before laying to ensure adhesion. Many contractors use a full mortar bed rather than the "dot and dab" method, which can crack on clay soils.
Planning permission for patios
Rear patios generally don't need planning permission unless they raise the ground level by more than 300mm or cover more than 50% of the garden. However, if your garden is in a conservation area or your property is listed, additional rules may apply. Check with your local council if you're unsure.
